The study also found that the average private well in the region had gone 4.2 years between water tests — more than four times the annual interval recommended by the EPA for private systems — with the longest gaps concentrated in older rural properties where families assume clear-looking water is safe until a pump fails, an appliance corrodes, or a household member gets sick.

The study examined testing frequency, the contaminants most often detected, the relationship between water quality and the lifespan of pumps and appliances, seasonal shifts in bacterial detections, and the effect of documented water quality on both repair costs and property value. Wells were grouped by testing history — regularly tested, occasionally tested, and never tested — and tracked for contaminant levels and total lifetime cost.
