Save Cambodia is spearheading momentum for meaningful change on an international level, bringing global attention to democracy and human rights issues happening now in Cambodia

Cambodia’s fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) session is to be held on May 8, 2024, and Save Cambodia (SC) has called on the international community to address democracy and human rights issues in the country.

The UPR offers global peer-to-peer dialog with an objective of advocacy and review and serves as a conduit for change in countries and communities in which governments have taken advantage of their people. This year, Cambodia is front and center in a session that represents meaningful opportunities for engagement, discussion, and pressure necessary for positive change. “With over six years in special consultative status with the United Nations, our nonprofit organization, Save Cambodia, has leaned into connections at the United Nations, and we’ve seen great results for our people approaching it this way,” said Thayvie Sinn, founder, and president of Save Cambodia. “This organization is run by people who understand Cambodia’s challenges, international law, and standards. We are committed to working on behalf of the community at large.”

Save Cambodia sheds light on government violations in Cambodia before the U.N., its agencies, and Member States. These reports serve as a roadmap for putting pressure on the Hun Sen / Hun Manet government, addressing pressing issues, amplifying the voices of the Cambodian people, and ensuring tangible actions are taken.

“We’ve solidified our efforts, and the momentum from Cambodia’s third-cycle review by the Universal Periodic Review in 2019 is leading to this. With the depth and strategy of our reports, we anticipate it will go well and can set a precedent globally, holding the Hun Sen/Hun Manet government accountable for their in actions regarding democracy and human rights and providing opportunities for the Khmer communities around the world to engage in UN mechanisms that provide a platform for them to speak truth to power, ” Thayvie said.

Save Cambodia demonstrates unwavering commitment to the Khmer community with its Urgent Action Alert network, which allows the international Khmer community to stay informed on current events minus political agendas or biases. This gives community members a way to make informed decisions and self-advocate, make connections with the global community, and get involved in putting pressure on the Hun Sen/Hun Manet government through simple yet highly effective methods such as letter writing.

Over the past two years, the UN has effectively identified the problems and deficiencies within the Cambodian government, particularly leading up to the 2023 national election, and outlined the necessary steps for remedying these issues. There are two ways you can watch the Cambodia UPR review session. The first is the full official UN broadcast, which can be seen at any time after 8 May 3:00 am EST by visiting UNWebTV. Save Cambodia will providing an executive summary where we will be highlighting the most important things you need to know from the UPR session, which can be seen any time after 11 May 11:00 am EST at https://savecambodia.org/.
